It’s a historic weekend in Penetanguishene. It is the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s voyage.

There will be numerous events this weekend. Friday, passengers hopped aboard the Serendipity and got a fully narrated historical tourof Champlain’s visit.

The town is celebrating Champlain’s first trip to the Penetanguishene area in 1615, where he first came in contact with the Huron-Wendat Nation.

“The excitement has just been building from one end of our town to the other, from one end of the province to the other,” saysPenetanguishene Mayor Gerry Marshall. “It’s just been fantastic. Feedback’s been great, and you don’t do anything like this without community volunteers.”

The history brought Meredith Tipton all the way from Portland, Maine. “For me this is really important that people are here for all the reasons that they want to come,” says Meredith. “But, primarily to understand their ancestry and to really cherish their legacy.”

Friday night you can expect a combination of both French and Aboriginal activities, workshops and live entertainment. The event runs all weekend.
