A nurse was left unconscious with two broken ribs after she was attacked by a patient at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, SEIU Healthcare says.

The union, which represents healthcare workers at RVH, says the registered practical nurse was on patient watch for the night on Wednesday when the assault happened.

According to SEIU Healthcare, the woman suffered severe facial injuries, two broken ribs and was found unconscious when police arrived.

“Healthcare can be dangerous work and we are outraged at this attack on our member and sister,” said Sharleen Steward, president of SEIU Healthcare. “She has and will continue to have our full support as she recovers from this incident.”

Barrie police say the man was taken to the hospital on Sunday after being apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

Hospital officials said on Thursday that they are taking the matter very seriously.

“While we can’t comment on the specifics of the incident due to patient and staff privacy and the fact it is under police investigation, what we can share is we are taking this matter very seriously and a full investigation is underway,” said Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
