PowerStream broke ground on the construction of a new project that will bring backup power to Penetanguishene.

The Penetanguishene Micro Grid will be installed on Robert Street East.

“There will be enough power in this battery to power 400 customers for 11 hours so it increases the reliability of the grid; it’s also taking power from renewable energy sources. It’s actually reducing the carbon footprint of the power system itself,” says PowerStream Pres. & CEO Brian Bentz.

The new grid will consist of two 500 kilowatt batteries as well as a 750 kilowatt power control connected to a power line. The pilot program will focus on local businesses, the arena and hospital at first before looking to expand to the rest of the town.

“It’s awesome when we do get the system up and running and it works the way it’s designed to do. If we do lose power for any reason, there will be no more worry of taking the meat off the shelves,” says Doug Rawson, owner of Rawson Meat.

The project is expected to be completed next year.
