With more than one million vehicles expected to travel Highway 400 for the long weekend, police are watching closely for distracted drivers as well as speeders and impaired drivers.

The OPP had announced earlier this week that they were sending and extra 10 unmarked vehicles looking for distracted drivers.

Police will also be on the water this weekend looking for impaired boaters.

“You can see the weather is quite nice. We anticipate there will be a lot of people out here celebrating out on the water and we're just gonna make sure everybody is safe and enjoying that last push as we head back to school and back to work” said Barrie Police Constable Doug Bosch.

Barrie Police will be conducing RIDE checks in Kempenflet Bay all weekend and boaters say it’s a great idea.

“It makes us feel good because we’re out on the lake a lot with the kids so we see a lot of traffic because we're just down the lake” says Shawn Murray.

Police would like to remind people that the fines for drinking and boating are the same as the ones for drinking and driving.
