South Simcoe Police were out on the ice this weekend looking for impaired drivers.

“Today we'll be enforcing all the laws,” said South Simcoe Police Constable Steve Black. “We’re making sure everybody knows they cannot be drinking alcohol in their fish huts."

He says there is zero tolerance when it comes to alcohol on the lake.

“If we smell alcohol, we'll address that,” said South Simcoe Police Constable Wes Brown.

Fisherman Andrew Russel says only a limited number of people drink out on the ice, but he's glad the police are enforcing the laws.

“When it gets dusk and you're sitting with your rods sometimes they can come pretty close,” he said about snowmobilers. “All of a sudden they could be coming really close and hitting your gear."

Residents in the area have also been complaining about the numbers of cars lining the roads near the ice.

“For the most part people are pretty good, but the garbage,” complained Gilford resident Gary Sands. “We're left picking it up. And the parking…sometimes you can't get out of your driveway. It's overwhelming."

Town of Innisil staff left information pamphlets and tickets on cars that were parked incorrectly on Sunday.

Ice huts are allowed to be out until March 15th, and officers say they’ll be patrolling the area until the ice is gone.
