An Oro-Medonte home is destroyed after a fire broke out late Wednesday night.

Investigators combed through the remains of the house on Ridge Road on Thursday morning, as they try to piece together what caused a destructive fire hours earlier.

“We all made it out safely I’m thankful for that. Everything else can be replaced,” says homeowner Mike Drozdow.

Drozdow says he was home with his wife and three kids when he smelt something burning in the basement.

“Without the smoke alarm, you know it gave us the advance warning and that the smoke was horrendous,” he says.

Crews were called to the two-storey house on Ridge, between Line 1 and Line 2 on Wednesday, around 9 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they discovered the building engulfed in flames.

“The cold was really a big challenge with the events last night. A lot of the trucks were freezing up just because waiting for us to use water,” says fire prevention officer, John Wigle. “The wind was really against us last night with the wind chill.”

No injuries are reported and damage is estimated at $400,000.
