The new medical marijuana facility being built in Bradford is vastly different from the automotive parts plant, which closed five years ago.

Medreleaf is expanding from its plant in Markham and soon their new plant will be more than 200,000 square feet. It will grow, process and ship out medical marijuana.

Medreleaf will be hiring 300 new employees, ranging from minimum wage jobs to positions that require a PHD.

“As time goes on, as we continue to expand, as you can see, there's a whole lot of space to fill, we'll be continuing to add people accordingly,” says Darren Karasiuk, VP of strategy or Medreleaf.

Which is part of the reason the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is so supportive of it.

“A state-of-the-art business, a growing business, no pun intended, but I think medical marijuana is going to take off in Canada,” says deputy mayor James Leduc.

The town is so supportive, it recently invested $90,000 into the business through a grant and says the community is also on board.

“We have had absolutely zero pushback from our community. This is an agriculture community, so you know what, we see this as a very agricultural product.”

Construction of phase one of the facility is already finished. Production begins in two weeks.

A job fair will be held on May 6 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and on May 10 between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Bradford Community Centre.
