Members of the National Special Olympics Swim Team are in Orangeville this weekend preparing for the World Summer Games.

Meagan Michie was one of the athletes taking part in the training on Friday and is a specialist in the 50, 100 and 200 metre breaststroke.

“I don’t really think when I swim, I just swim. I think before I swim but I don’t think while I’m swimming.”

The swim team’s head coach says these men and women are the best of the best when it comes to the pool in our country.

“They have to go through a long process which means most of them have been swimming for years, provincial qualification two years ago, national qualification last year and we’re going for the World Games next year so they have been working for at least three to four years,” says Alain Maille.

One hundred and seventy countries send about 10,000 athletes to the games.

The athletes will stay in Orangeville until Sunday and then head home. They will compete in Montreal in May before heading to Los Angeles in the summer for the World Games
