Some people are heading to the polls early to elect new municipal governments.

Both phone lines and a website opened at 10 a.m. Monday for voters in Springwater Township.

“We're hoping to at least maintain, but certainly increase our voter turnout,” says Springwater Township clerk John Daly. “We anticipate that if you are a commuter, you will have time to cast your ballot while you commute or if you’re on a lunch hour.”

Springwater is hoping to improve on the 38% voter turnout from 2010.

Early polling has also started in the City of Barrie.

Advance polling stations were opened in busy buildings right after Thanksgiving weekend.

“Some of our larger apartment buildings and condos within the community, as well as long-term care facilities have advance polls,” said City Clerk Dawn McAlpine. “So far we've had over 2400 electors.”

In the last municipal election, only 44% of eligible Ontarians voted.

In this election, 25% have voted already in Collingwood, 4.1% in Newmarket, 3% in Barrie, and 4.5% in Oro-Medonte.

Municipal election day is next Monday October 27th.
