Provincial police are investigating after vandals damaged a train at the South Simcoe Railway.

According to Nottawasaga OPP, an unknown number of suspects vandalized a locomotive and two rail cars at the historic Tottenham location.

Police say the suspects broke several windows and damaged or destroyed antiques in one of the cars.

"This thing is historical, really historical. In the dining room area we have an oak table that seats eight people. The chairs have been there since 1912 probably,” says Eric Smith of the South Simcoe Railway. “They were used to smash all the stain glass and lead glass windows. It’s just unbelievable. None of that stuff is replaceable.”

Police believe the vandalism happened sometime over the weekend.

"It's pretty depressing. You spend all your time, your free time, trying to show people what used to be," says Eric Smith of the South Simcoe Railway.

“To have hooligans break in here, and that's what they are, and destroy this stuff; there is countless of volunteer hours put into this to make this railway work,” says OPP Const. Harry Lawernson. “To see that destroyed is just unconscionable.”

Evidence has been collected and police hope it will help them identify the suspects.
