Some local MPs had to barricade themselves inside rooms in the Parliament Buildings on Wednesday, to stay safe during the shootings on and near Parliament Hill.

Barrie MP Patrick Brown was in a Conservative caucus meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper when gun shots rang out.

He says people in the room secured the doors with chairs, because it was very close to where the gunfire was happening.

Parry Sound MP Tony Clement was sending out tweets all day updating people on his status.

Right after the gunfire, he tweeted "at least 30 shots fied", and then "I'm safe with 2 colleagues but we're still at risk."

While waiting for police to evacuate the building, Clement tweeted "still patiently awaiting rescue here in centre block. I feared this day would come."

Canadian Forces bases across Canada have been told to consider increasing their security.

However, at CFB Borden, there have been no visible changes at the main entrance to the base.

Politicians say they’re shaken by today’s events, and say it will bring about many questions about safety and security in the days to come.

“You don't expect something like this to happen in Canada,” said Brown. “Obviously this is something that cannot happen.”
