Police are continuing to search for clues after a Peel Regional Police officer had her gun stolen from the trunk of her car at her home in Barrie.

Many residents living on Rose Street in Barrie are concerned after a .40 calibre handgun and ammunition was stolen from the car of a Peel Regional Police officer who lives on the street late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

“I thought they had to leave them in their lockers. I'm shocked,” one neighbour said.

In a statement to CTV News, Peel Regional Police said they are conducting an internal investigation into the matter, in addition to the investigation being done by Barrie police.

"The Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Barrie police is conducting the investigation and Peel Regional Police are fully cooperating with it,” the statement said.

Peel Regional Police wouldn’t comment on their policy on the storage of firearms for off-duty officers and what disciplinary action, if any, will happen.

Barrie police would not offer a comment on the policies of another police department, but did say it's never a good practice for anyone to store firearms in a vehicle.

“Ultimately the primary focus is the retrieval and the location of this equipment,” says Det. Brett Haynes of the Barrie Police Service.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
