Hundreds gathered to run in the fifth annual Base Borden Run Sunday.

The runners were raising money to fund Georgian College scholarships for kids from a military family.

“Operation hero is an endowment fund created by industry leaders in the Simcoe County area to provide scholarships for military personal and kin of military," said Base Borden Run co-chair Matt Pryce.

The scholarships are named after two young military members who died serving in Afganistan.

Jennine Collier’s brother was one of those young men and she is one of the scholarship recipients.

“Brian always pushed for me to be a police office and then I decided after he was killed that I wanted to go to school for police foundations. And then getting this scholarship made me push ever harder to try my best and work harder in school and to hopefully one day become a police officer," she said.

For others the run is a chance to express gratitude for everything the military does.

"It's a chance for us to say thank you and a chance for us to give back to the military and the sacrifices they make for us to live in such a beautiful country," said runner Matt Pryce.

The run has raised over $100,000 since its first year
