Gas prices in Barrie varied on Monday from 79.1 cents at one station to 90.0 cents at another.

The gas attendant at one Shell station told CTV News that he watches to see what the Canadian Tire station across the street charges, and then follows suit.

A lot of communities in our region were paying around 82 cents, although Stayner was below 80 cents and Newmarket was over 90 cents.

“It really doesn’t make sense to me why people wouldn’t drive the extra few blocks to get the cheaper prices,” said driver Cody Clement.

Gas price watchdog Dan McTeague, says gas stations have to consider the wholesale price, taxes, and retail profit when setting their prices.

He says the retail margin can range from 9 cents to 0.

When it comes to diesel, the prices have come down but nowhere near as much as regular gas.

“I bought this car years ago and it has ended up costing us a lot more than we thought it would,” said diesel user Jose Torres.

McTeague says when it comes to diesel, demand skyrockets during winter and that is why it costs more.

He says Canadians pay more than Americans because the supply is low and what we do produce is being sold outside of Canada.
