The mother of murder victim, Steve Garnier, delivered a statement at the sentencing hearing for the young woman convicted of killing her son.

A victim impact statement from Garnier's mother was read on Monday by her daughter in a Barrie court. The young woman sat silently during the proceedings and did not show any emotion.

"I would sit on my porch night after night waiting for Steven to come home," Sandra Garnier wrote. "There will forever be a hole in my heart for the son I have lost."

The young woman, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, was 17 when Garnier was stabbed to death at a party in 2012 in Alliston.

Her conviction carries a mandatory life sentence, but the Crown wants her sentenced as an adult. This means time in a federal prison and having to wait 10 years for a chance to apply for parole.

However, the defense thinks that's too harsh and wants her sentenced as a young offender, which would allow her to apply for parole sooner.

The Crown later argued that the young woman is not ready to be released and said a sentence in a federal prison will give her the time to get rehabilitated.

The defence says that would undo a lot of the good she has done to improve herself and wants any time to be served in a provincial jail or in the community.

The Crown called this a unique case because of the age of the young woman and the charge.

The sentencing phase is expected to continue on Tuesday.
