A flood warning remains in effect for parts of the Kawartha Lakes area.

The City of Kawartha Lakes says the warning affects the shoreline areas of Balsam, Cameron, Sturgeon, Pigeon lakes, and Lake Scugog.

The Ministry of Natural Resources Flood Warning for the Burnt, Irondale, Gull and Black River areas also remains in effect, and is expected to last until April 22.

The Burnt River has crested, the city says. The water level was at 5.27 metres Friday morning, having decreased 0.27m since the day before.

The water levels in Balsam, Cameron, Sturgeon, Pigeon lakes and Lake Scugog have also stabilized.

Water levels remain high however, and the city is urging residents to stay away from water bodies and bridges, culverts, and dams.

Filled sandbags are still available at:

  • Burnt River depot, 90 Kawartha Lakes Road 44
  • Bobcaygeon depot, 62 Duke St.
  • Emily Depot, 193 Centreline Rd.
  • Coboconk depot, 2863 Hwy 48
  • Dalton Community Centre, Old Hwy 503 (at Young’s Lake)

Sand and bags are available at:

  • Oakwood Depot, 1010 Eldon Rd.
  • Carden Depot, 12 Lake Dalrymple Rd.
  • Black River area – at the intersection of Chisholm Trail and Amon Dr.

About 15 roads are still closed because of flooding; a full list is available on the City of Kawartha Lakes website.

Meanwhile, a burn ban is in effect as of April 16 because of the dead and dry debris sitting on the ground.

Even though the ground may seem saturated, says Fire Chief Mark Pankhurst, that debris can catch fire easily and spread quickly.

“Typically by the end of April things have greened up and the risk of grass fires is dramatically reduced,” he said in a news release.
