Several initiatives took place across the region to mark Earth Day, and draw attention to environmental issues.

A cleanup took place at Barrie’s waterfront Saturday morning. It is part of an annual initiative by the city of Barrie called “Spring Into Clean”. Several events take place to raise environmental awareness and social responsibility.

Last year 1500 people collected more than six tonnes of litter across the city.

A cleanup also took place in Orillia.

“We are making a big impact on the environment now. So much more garbage out there,” says Orillia naturalist Bob Bowles. “It’s starting to affect some of the wildlife, so it’s so important now that we are aware of that, and keep our natural areas clean.”

The Orillia cleanup took place on trails, parks and streets near the waterfront.
