50 students comprised of firefighters, veterinarians, and horse owners took a course to learn how to help large animals that are in crisis.

The class was held in Loretto by the president of Technical Large Emergency Rescue Rebecca Gimenez.

“We want to be able to interact the emergency services who might not be very good as far as the behaviour of animals,” says Gimenez “with the owners who might not be very good at how to run a scene.”

Responding to emergency calls that include animals is a very common occurrence in rural areas.

It's important to have this type of training because this is a very busy highway,” said Fire Chief Victor MacPherson. “Every day there's horse trailers and livestock trailers. It's not a matter of if.... It's a matter of when.”

Courses like this one will hopefully prepare emergency responders to help when big animals are in trouble.
