A 65-year-old man has died after being pulled from the Black River Saturday afternoon after a canoe capsized.

OPP say he was wearing a lifejacket when he was pulled from the water by Ramara Township firefighters. He was rushed to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, where OPP say he was pronounced dead.

Ramara Fire Chief Dave McCarthy tells CTV News the man showed no vital signs when he was pulled from the river and rescuers had to perform CPR.

The man was canoeing with a 65-year-old woman who was also pulled from the frigid river by passersby. McCarthy says she is suffering hypothermia. After being taken hospital in Orillia, she was airlifted to a Durham Region-area hospital.

She is still there as of this morning.

Just before noon Saturday, emergency crews from all over the area responded to a call of two people in the water along Black River Road.

Derek Lahay with the Kawartha Lakes Fire Department says the shore where the rescue happened was bushy with lots of trees. He also says the water conditions made it difficult.

"The water is still cold ... still high and very, very fast moving," he says. "The water level hasn't gone down yet."

For anyone thinking about heading out on the water, Lahay says, "Wait until it gets back to normal first."

McCarthy says it’s unclear why the couple was canoeing.
