Police are alerting the public after eight businesses in Durham Region were scammed by a man delivering bogus packages.

They say businesses in Whitby, Oshawa, Pickering and Port Perry have reported being scammed by a man posing as a courier since the beginning of last month.

In most instances, the business, usually a restaurant, received a call from a man posing as a customer who was expecting a package to be delivered before he arrived for his reservation and requested the business cover the delivery charge.

Police say the original customer never arrived and the boxes dropped off by the fake courier contained discarded magazines.
