Police and the Ministry of Transportation were out targeting unsafe commercial vehicles along Highway 400 Wednesday.

It's a two-day safety blitz focusing on unsafe trucks that police say is crucial to making roads safer.

“With great power, big size come big responsibilities and unfortunately there`s already a few of these trucks taken off the road because they actually have major defects,” said Staff Sgt. David Mitchell with York Regional Police.

More than 480 trucks were pulled in and inspected. Officers are checking everything from log books to mechanical defects, brakes, axles and tires.

“These vehicles are on the road a lot of time, 10 to 12 hours a day - They`re moving large items and a lot of the time they`re not turned off,” said Mitchell.

More than 100 commercial trucks were taken out of service Wednesday due to various mechanical defects and safety violations.
