The final phase of a $14 million upgrade to Georgian Bay General Hospital is underway.

Officials broke ground on the 20,000 square foot emergency department on Friday afternoon.

“These renovations will benefit patients by decreasing department wait times and ensuring the reliable function of hospital services, programs and technical services,” says MPP Ann Hoggarth.

The hospital will also get a new, badly-needed ambulance bay, a new triage area, an acute examination room and a decontamination unit.

The ER in midland is actually one of the busiest in Ontario. Hospital CEO Breaking ground on a $14M expansion at GBGH estimates they can see around 45,000 patients a year.

“The more people we can service the better and the quicker the people can be serviced the better,” says patient Mary Ditomaso.

The final phase is expected to take about 18 months to complete.
