A series of break-ins in the Parry Sound area has police concerned and issuing a warning for home and cottage owners.

In most cases the thieves are going after household items, but in one of the robberies guns were taken. Police say one of the break-ins occurred in business and several fire arms were stolen. Police won't say how many guns were taken but admit they still haven't found them.

They say this is now a safety concern.

Police in the Parry Sound area say they have been called to 14 cottage and residential break-ins in the past few weeks alone. The break-ins have taken place over a wide area in Parry Sound. Both cottages and year-round homes have been hit.

Walter Sembey has heard of the break-ins in the area. He takes no chances when it comes to his house.

He locks all his windows, and all of his doors.

It was a lesson he learned the hard way after he was robbed a few years ago.

“They used torches and cutters and took my sled. It makes you feel violated. It upsets you,” he says.

With many seasonal property owners calling it a year in Muskoka, police are warning people to guard against potential break-ins.

Const. Zenobie Loach with the OPP says would-be thieves are looking for anything they can get – from weapons to alcohol to electronics. And police think some of the recent break-ins may be connected.

Police are reminding anyone with a gun to make sure it is properly stored and locked away just in case they get broken into. Police say it's also a good idea to come up and check out your cottage a few times during the winter season.
