With the Labour Day long weekend here, Canadian Blood Services (CBS) says the need for blood is in high demand.

There are many reasons why it’s good to give blood and Sarah Grant has a couple of her own.

“I came here to save a life and I have children and hope that if they ever needed blood it would be there for them too.”

But this year there has been many empty chairs in blood donor rooms at clinics across the country.

“Canadian Blood Services is sitting at a five year low for blood collection. A scary way to start off the summer when it’s tough to collect anyway,” says CBS spokesperson Julie Rose.

Statistics say that 28% of Canadians think about giving blood but only four to five actually do.

“There’s more of a need for blood because unfortunately there are more traffic accidents and boating accidents happening,” added Rose.

Chris Battaglia donated on Thursday for the 125th time. He started giving back in 1975 when his brother was in a life threatening car accident on a long weekend.

“He had a lot of surgeries going on and after that I just kept giving to help friends, family, and strangers.”
