A Barrie man is dead after a serious motorcycle crash in Shanty Bay.

Emergency crews rushed to the area of Line 3 North and Highland Drive on Sunday, just after 8:30 p.m.

According to the OPP, the motorcycle rider left the roadway for some unknown reason and crashed.

Ryan Tran, 21, of Barrie was rushed to hospital, but was later pronounced dead. The investigation is still ongoing.

A deadly weekend

Tran’s death followed two other fatal collisions that happened over the weekend.

On Friday, a 68-year-old Toronto woman died when her car collided with a tractor trailer and was struck by another vehicle on Highway 89, near Shelburne.

A fiery crash on County Road 50, south of Highway 89 claimed the life of a man in his 40s on Saturday. Police say the man’s car crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a commercial truck.

Now midway through the year, provincial police are reporting 138 deaths on OPP-patrolled roads.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says aggressive driving and speeding continue to be the biggest problem. Those types of deadly crashes are up 100 per cent when compared to last year.

“We're seeing an increase in all four categories: aggressive driving, impaired driving, distracted driving and seatbelt use. [They] are all up when compared to the same period last year in fatal collisions,” he says.

Police remind drivers to use their driving skills and experience to make sure everyone gets where they need to go safely.
