A donated van is helping the Barrie Food Bank pick up much need donations from across the city.

The keys to the new 2016 GMC Savana was handed over to the food bank on Tuesday and will replace a van which has clocked up more than 200,000 kilometres.

“When Peter called this time and said the van is getting old we need to make some changes we're happy to step up and help,” says Jamie Massie, owner of Georgian Chevrolet.

The dealership and Kiwanis Club teamed up to donate the van. The food bank uses the vehicle to pick up almost 600,000 pounds of food every year.

Inside the food bank, the struggle continues to fill the shelves before school starts.

“Normally we would have close to 300,000 pounds of food in the warehouse and on our shelves,” says Peter Sunborg. “Currently at the moment we're probably lucky if we have about 25,000.”

They’re looking for the normal non-perishable items, but also food children can take to school for lunch.
