Midland police says they had to shoot and kill an aggressive dog at a park because the animal posed a risk to public safety.

The large Cane Corse was found tied up in a fenced storm water control pond at Little Lake Park on Monday afternoon.

Huronia Animal Control attended the scene and attempted to subdue the dog, but was unsuccessful.

Midland police was contacted and a search was launched to locate the owner. Investigators say the dog started moving around the enclosure and was deemed as a “significant threat to public safety.”

“The animal displayed aggression as officers tried to get close to him,” Insp. Ron Wheeldon said in a statement.  “We hoped we could calm the animal and verify who the owner might have been.”

The park was closed down and a nearby daycare at the YMCA was put on a hold and secure.  The animal was then put down.

“The other option was to tranquilize the animal, but heavy brush and undergrowth paired with significant distance would have made the use of this resource almost impossible, however it was considered.”

Animal control and Midland police are still trying to locate the owner.

Charges are pending under the Dog Owner Liability Act.
