The province’s police watchdog has ruled out any criminal wrongdoing in a death at a Midland park.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, Midland Police spoke with a man by telephone on June 1, and told him he was facing criminal "jeopardy" in connection with an incident in 2015.

“The man was invited to attend the police station, and was told he would be allowed to return home afterwards,” the SIU said in its report.

A short time later, police received a call from the man’s wife who told officers her husband was at a Midland park. When officers arrived at the scene, the man was found dead.

The SIU says there are no reasonable grounds to charge the officer who spoke with the 44-year-old man by telephone.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police when there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
