Eight medical students received a warm welcome in Bracebridge Wednesday after they arrived to the Muskoka town to complete academic training from local physicians.

The orientation included a tour of the town with some stops at popular destinations. It was all part of an effort to convince the students to practise in Muskoka.

“They’re our future medical professionals and physicians and it’s our hope that perhaps some of them will come back and work,” said Robert Alldred-Hughes with Muskoka Algonquin Health Care.

The students are from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and will be doing their clerkship over the next eight months at the hospitals in Bracebridge and Huntsville.

“To really be welcomed in the community makes a great first step to feel like we’re part of the community,” said medical student Michelle Taylor.

A similar orientation will be held in Huntsville on Thursday.
