A man who pleaded guilty in the brutal attack of a 14-year old girl in a Shelburne park has been sentenced.

Jade Cowan, 21, was sentenced on Thursday to eight years in prison, but will get credit for time served. That works out to a prison sentence for just over five years.

The court also ordered Cowan be designated a long-term offender for the next 10 years. A DNA sample will also be submitted.

Cowan was 19-years-old when he hit the teen in the head multiple times with a rock. The court also previously heard that Cowan choked the teen when she tied to fight back.

He was charged with aggravated assault in the incident.

Last year he pleaded guilty to the offence.
