A man arrested in Barrie for defrauding financial institutions of millions of dollars has been sentenced to jail time.

Rajeer Henry Balendra was found guilty of conspiracy to commit fraud over $5,000, illegal possession of counterfeit data, possession of counterfeit credit cards and identity theft.

The 33-year-old Toronto man was handed a four year prison sentence.

Balendra and one other man were stopped in a stolen car on Highway 400 in March 2013. Police say the arrest led to the discovery of 2,500 counterfeit and stolen credit card numbers, counterfeit driver’s licences and a template to manufacture counterfeit licences.

Police say Balendra defrauded financial institutions across Canada and United States of more than $2 million.
