The man charged in a stabbing and hostage taking in downtown Barrie will remain in police custody.

The 42-year-old man briefly appeared in a Barrie courtroom on Thursday, but his case was put over until Dec. 22.

Barrie police say the accused stabbed a man during a fight at a party in a downtown apartment on Tuesday. Investigators say he then fled to his apartment just down the street and barricaded himself inside with his three roommates.

After an hour of negotiating, the man surrendered to police.

The stabbing victim, a 26-year-old Barrie man, was taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre for treatment. No one else was injured.

The accused now faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault with a weapon, and three counts of probation violations.
