Three people are facing charges after a police chase in Essa Township early Sunday morning.

OPP say an officer pulled a car over on County Road 90 near George Johnston Road at about 4:30 a.m. Once the driver stopped, police say a man jumped out of the car and took off, throwing a weapon away.

Police tracked the man down and arrested him, and say he had a 9mm handgun.

The 28-year-old from Toronto was charged with one count of possessing a loaded prohibited weapon and with failing to comply with a recognizance. He was held for a bail hearing over the weekend, and has his next court date on April 23 in Barrie. Police say more charges are pending.

OPP allege there were drugs in the vehicle in view of the officers who pulled it over. Two other people inside are also facing charges.

The driver, a 28-year-old Barrie woman, was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance. A second passenger in the vehicle, a 27-year-old Barrie woman, was charged with failing to comply with a probation order and with possession of a schedule II substance.
