Fire investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of a fire early Saturday morning in north Barrie that sent five people scrambling to safety.
Crews were called to the home at 56 Hickling Trail around 6:40 a.m. and when they arrived the home was engulfed in flames.
“That was one of the most burnt out houses I’ve been in in a long time,” says Rob Taylor, who’s been with the Barrie Fire Department for 30-years.
There were five students home at the time of the fire and they managed to escape safely, some of them through a window.
“Two of them got out through the front door, climbing underneath the fire,” says Taylor. “Another person in the basement had to go out the window, as did the people in the rear bedroom. They had to escape out the back window.”
There’s no word on what caused the fire, although crews believe it started on the main floor.
According to fire officials the house will have to be taken down.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s officer is expected to be on scene on Monday to investigate.
