With the return of frigid temperatures and winter weather, many people across the region are trying to salvage their outdoor rinks before time runs out.

“I’m going to put lots of water to it over the next couple of days and see’s what happens,” said Innisfil resident Shannon Brewer, who is hoping to lace up the skates again.

The next few days may just save the season as the overnight lows are expected to drop below -20 C.  The bitter cold temperatures will allow tennis and basketball courts and even some baseball diamonds to be flooded again.

In Barrie, the city maintains 30 outdoor rinks, but only two are currently open.  Both the rink outside city hall and the one at Centennial Beach have cooling systems.

The other 24 rinks remain closed until further notice.
