A Huntsville kennel owner is facing animal cruelty charges after a number of dogs were allegedly found with open wounds and limps.

According to the Ontario SPCA, officers received calls concerning the care of dogs at the kennel last month.

Investigators attended the kennel and found 42 Alaskan Husky and Malamute-type sled dogs.  The OSPCA says the dogs were suffering from a number of wounds, some that were open and others that were infected.

Other dogs reportedly had swollen legs and infected teeth.

Deerhurst Resort confirms the dogs belong to a third-party operator who they contract to provide dog sledding tours.

“The care of the sled dogs is exclusively the responsibility of this third party and we are not aware of any concerns about the treatment of these animals to date,” a resort spokesperson said in a statement to CTV News.

The 47-year-old owner now faces four charges under the OSPCA Act, including permitting an animal to be in distress and failing to provide appropriate medical attention.

The owner was also ordered to repair pens, provide shade and clean shelter. Four dogs were ordered to undergo examination by a veterinarian. Three of those dogs have since been surrendered by the owner to the OSPCA.

The accused will appear in a Bracebridge court on Aug. 23.
