Goose and duck hunting season starts on September 27th, and many don’t know the rules or regulations.

Garry Lent, who lives on Cooks Bay, say some people are breaking the law by starting the season early:

“I heard gun shooting this morning,” says Lent. “I was standing out on the point there. I saw them shooting at the geese this morning so I called it in.”

Police are reminding people that when hunting in a boat, the motor must be off and the boat must be stopped.

They also want to remind hunters that they are only allowed to hunt for half an hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunset, and only in legal areas.

They’re also asking residents not to call 911 when they hear hunting gunshots.

Hunters are limited to shooting six ducks, five Canadian geese, and one American black duck.
