The first day of the ski season came unusually early this year at Horseshoe Valley Resort and more than 1,000 people took advantage.

"We're really excited to get the whole family on the hill,” said skier Sabrina Mathias.

The resort’s opening day didn’t break attendance records, but Horseshoe’s Jonathan Reid says they’ll be able to stay open even though higher temperatures will melt some snow.

"Years ago we did open earlier, but this is one of our earlier openings and it's the earliest we've been able to make snow," he said. "We have almost a three foot base out there from the natural snow and the manmade snow. There's warmer temperature coming and then late Tuesday it drops again, so we're ready to fire up the snow guns again. But we’ve got lots of snow on the runs we have open."

So far they have two ski runs, 20 kilometers of cross country tails and a small terrain park open.
