A push to have a high school built in Wasaga Beach has been quashed.

During a meeting on Wednesday night, the Simcoe County District School Board heard pleas from residents asking them to include a school in the capital priority plan.

“Our children in Wasaga Beach deserve what every child deserve child in this province, in this country, in North America have and that's to have an opportunity to attend high school, public school in their own community,” says Mayor Brian Smith.

However, the board says the student numbers don’t warrant a school in the town.

“Growth over the next 20 years in Wasaga Beach is 89 students and that's just above what's currently there, so 89 students just isn't enough over 20 years,” says Peter Beacock, chair of SCDSB.

More than 700 students are currently bussed to high schools in nearby towns. The board points out those schools could be at risk if one opened up in Wasaga Beach.

But Smith says Wasaga students shouldn't be relied upon to fill other schools at the expense of having their own.

“I know it would impact other communities as well, and that's unfortunate, but being selfish, I would just love to see one locally in the beach,” says Denise Henry, who has a daughter in high school.

The capital priority plan will be coming out in the next few weeks.  The mayor says even if Wasaga Beach isn't on the list, he's not giving up the fight anytime soon.
