People at the Honda plant in Alliston are celebrating another major milestone, as the 10th generation 2016 Honda Civic was unveiled.

Many in Alliston say Honda is the most important building block in the town's economic success. The automaker has been pushing out Civics from the Alliston plant for 27 years.

“Civic has been the number one selling car in Canada for the last 17 years and we're heading for number 18 right now,” says Jerry Chenkin, CEO of Honda Canada.

Shelly Sherrif says over the years, Honda employees have bought a lot of homes in the area. Now it's tough to find someone who doesn’t have a Honda connection.

“Our family, our friends… every other household seems to be employed by Honda,” says Sherrif.

Taylor's Jeweler's has been in business in Alliston for more than 60 years and the owners say a large part of their success is due to Honda.

“If not for the investment by Honda years ago, we wouldn't have been able to expand,” says Rose Taylor. “It's afforded us three generations of family business in this town.”

Chenkin says with the recent multi-million dollar commitment to the new Honda engine plant in Alliston, more success is on the way.

“I think this is a huge vote of confidence in Honda Canada and our operation’s here.”

The 2016 Honda Civic will be delivered to dealerships later this fall, which is good news for the car world and good news for 4,200 Honda employees that live and work in and around the Alliston area.
