It’s going to be a hot and humid weekend across much of Ontario.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning on Wednesday, as temperatures are forecast to hit 40 C with the humidex. The high heat rolled in on Thursday and is expected to continue through the weekend.

This year’s heat hasn’t been record breaking, but it has been consistent.

“If you counted the number of days above 30, we've had 15 of those. Typically we've got maybe four by this time,” says Environment Canada climatologist David Phillips. “Probably before the weekends out we'll add another three of those days above 30.”

The weather office says some people may experience heat related illnesses. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, rapid breathing, extreme thirst and a decrease in urination.

People are asked to drink lots of water and are encouraged to stay out of the sun for prolonged periods of time.

“With the extremely young, their body systems haven't quite developed well enough yet to signify that their temperature is going up,” says JC Gilbert, deputy chief with the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services. “With the elderly they don't necessarily see the signs or feel the effects as more of a middle aged person might.”

They’re also reminding residents not to leave pets or people inside of vehicles.

Metrolinx says GO Train service on the Barrie line will be slowed on Thursday afternoon because of the extreme heat.

The slow order will add about an extra 10 to 15 minutes to the commute.

The order will likely be in place again on Friday.
