Fire crews had their hands full on Sunday battling several grass fire throughout the region.

Firefighters in Adjala-Tosorontio responded to three separate grass fires in just a few short hours on Sunday afternoon. The biggest of these grass fires was near Everett.

Two Adjala-Tosorontio fire stations were called to Concession Road 6 near Five Sideroad, where a fire consumed nearly 30 acres of a corn field.

“This one was definitely wind driven. We had the fire under control – the wind picked up and it got into the corn stubble and it was very hard to control after that,” says Adjala-Tosorontio fire Chief Ralph Snyder.

The fire is now extinguished, but crews say it was sparked because of a brush fire someone started got out of control.

In Barrie, crews were called to a grass fire near Anne Street and Milligan’s Pond. Flames moved fast, but Barrie firefighters responded quickly and managed to put it out.

Elsewhere, Innisfil fire crews were quick to stop a grass fire from spreading to a nearby home. Officials say the fire started because a “burn barrel” was left too close to the dry grass.

Firefighters say this time of year is when crews typically see grass fires, as people are out cleaning up around the yard.
