Drivers looking to fill-up for the weekend had a pleasant surprise Friday morning, gas prices dropped overnight.

Gas was selling for around 91.9 cents a litre in Barrie on Friday morning, with Costco selling it for 86.9 cents a litre.

In Wasaga Beach, the line-up for gas was eight lanes wide and three cars deep at one point on Friday as gas dipped just under a $1 a litre.

“The last time oil was this cheap, we were paying about 70 cents per litre, that’s what I think of it, I think we are still being gouged a bit,” says Wasaga Beach resident Keith Kueneman.

The break at the pump comes as cottagers and boaters head out for the weekend. Gas price analyst Dan McTeague says fuel for the boat would be even less expensive if the value of the Canadian dollar was higher.

“This time last year it took one hundred pennies to buy one U.S. dollar, today it takes 133 to do the same so that’s a loss in itself of about 11 or 12 cents per litre,” adds McTeague.

But even with gas prices around $1, it’s still about 30 cents cheaper less than this time last year.

Shaun Talbot owns and operates a jet ski rental in Wasaga Beach, he says lower gas prices have been good for tourism, business and boating in general.

“We have found more boats this year than the past five years so I think boating is going to pick up if gas prices stay the way they are. I think boating is going to be even busier next season,” adds Talbot.

McTeague says the current prices won’t last for long, he expects the price of gas to jump back up on Monday by 4 to 7 cents a litre.

GasBuddy.com was reporting gas prices on Friday of 96.8 a litre in Orillia, 95.6 in Angus, 97.9 in Midland and almost $1.04 in Bracebridge.
