A gas leak downtown Barrie Friday morning prompted fire crews to close down a city block and evacuate seven nearby buildings.

Just after 9 am on Friday police received a call from Chaopaya Thai on Dunlop Street. Staff reported smelling gas in the area. Emergency crews responded and found gas levels in the restaurant were at what they call “explosive” or dangerous levels.

Emergency crews evacuated the restaurant and, as a precaution, evacuated seven other nearby buildings. They closed down Dunlop street north to Collier Street, in between Poyntz St and Sampson Street.

Enbridge Gas was called to the scene. Fire Officials say an excavator hit a gas line, which caused the leak. The roads were re-opened by mid-day.
