The young woman, who killed Steve Garnier at a house party in Alliston three years ago, had a chance to address the judge before she learns her sentence.

For the first time in this case, the young woman, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, spoke before a Barrie court on Tuesday.

Fighting back tears, the woman said, “I am deeply sorry for what I have done and I know it was wrong… this apology won't be enough to bring him back.”

She later said, “I am deeply ashamed and sickened by what I have done"

The Crown wants the woman sentenced as an adult and sent to a federal prison for seven years. The defence wants her sentenced as a young offender, meaning time served, plus three years of community supervision. That would set her free in April.

The woman's grandparents are hoping for the lighter sentence.  On Tuesday, they told the court she was a happy kid saying, “She loved horses as a child and was riding them by seven. She was a role model to other young girls."

However, they said that changed when her mother died of a drug overdose.

"She spiralled down. Started high school and drugs, and quit riding.”

The court heard the young woman has started to turn her life around since her arrest. She is back in school and has won several scholarships.

The defence says she needs a "structured environment with a structured plan" and argued that her best shot at a full recovery is by serving the remainder of her sentence in the community.

The young woman also told the court today, “I have no desire to go back to the life I was living."

The judge will hand down her sentence April 19.
