Home and business owners in Owen Sound are trying to cope with frozen pipes which have plagued the city.

Deborah Herman has been without running for a week now.

“We are not the only ones that going through it, there are more people every day having it happen,” said Herman.

Water mains are buried an average of two meters in the ground, but this winter the frost has reached even deeper, causing pipes to freeze and burst.

The city says in the past three weeks more than 200 homes and businesses have had to deal with frozen pipes. So far, city crews have managed to thaw or bypass half of the reported cases.

Owen Sounds’ director of operations calls the number of frozen pipes unprecedented.

Residents in problem areas have been asked to keep one tap open to stop the water from freezing.

Some residents may be without water for an extended period of time. The city’s water depot is offering up to 50 litres of free drinking water and showers are available at Owen Sounds’ recreation centres.

Freezing water services have also been a problem in Wiarton, Dundalk, Meaford, The Blue Mountains and Collingwood
