Four people had to be rescued after the sailboat they were riding on capsized in Georgian Bay on Canada Day.

Police say the sailboat left a cottage on Band Island around 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday and when the sailboat did not return at 6 p.m. when it was expected, the family of the four people called the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) and the OPP.

A Hercules helicopter was called in to help with the search and the four people were located just after 11 p.m. on Pine Island.

Police say the four were located in a cottage after swimming safely to shore after their boat capsized, all four were wearing their personal floatation devices.

The OPP marine unit transported them back to their cottage on Band Island.

Police would like to remind everyone that wearing your personal floatation devices can save lives in an unexpected mishap.
