It's a problem around almost every body of water – fishing line wrapped around birds and waterfowl.

The Orillia harbourmaster is part of a group trying to prevent this from happening. That’s why it's installing fishing line recycling boxes.

Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has helped install dozens of the units around Lake Simcoe.

“They're fairly simple; made out of PVC plastic,” says Will Wegman, a spokesperson with the MNRF. “Just a receptacle for folks to put their used fishing line in.”

The recycling units in Orillia were made by local naturalist Bob Bowles. The MNRF is hoping other people will get on board and want to make their own.

“We're trying to co-ordinate those efforts and make a list of where they all are. Make contact with the municipality and that they're put up where the town wants them and that they're emptied regularly.”

The old fishing line is recycled to make other fishing products, so nothing goes to waste.
