It's a very exciting time for young children getting ready to go to school for the first time, but it can also be a little intimidating, especially for students who have to take a school bus.

That's where the Simcoe County student transportation consortium first rider program comes in.

“They learn about the loading and unloading process,” said safety officer Sean Levasseur.

The program helps young students feel more comfortable with the whole idea of getting on a bus and going to school.

“I think we see a lot of kids very apprehensive when they first line-up to get on the bus,” said Levasseur. “They get on the bus with mom and dad, when they return back they unload to their parents, they get excited and the kids are a little less apprehensive and a little more excited about the first day of school.”

The consortium is offering the first rider program at various locations across Simcoe County up until august 29th.
