A fire destroyed the garage and part of a home just south of Rosemont in Adjala-Tosorontio on Saturday afternoon.

The fire started around 4:00 p.m. in the garage attached to the home on Concession Road 2.

“I got very scared,” said homeowner Mark Foster. “I ran and dialed 911 and got out of there as fast as I could.”

Foster was able to get out safely after hearing his smoke alarm.

“If it wasn’t for the smoke alarm…the smoke alarm saved my life,” he said. “I didn’t realise how fast it could go. It’s way faster than I could have ever even possibly have believed.”

Nearly 50 firefighters from four different fire departments put out the fire using an office attack.

“Weather conditions can either make it more complex or make it a little easier,” said Gary Gnirss from the Rosemont Fire Department. “Luckily it made it easier for us.”

Fire officials believe the fire started because of an electrical issue and it is estimated the fire caused $500,000 worth of damage to the home.
